The quality of education is based on the effectiveness and efficiency of the teachers. Recognizing this, the Department of Education has embarked on a transformative initiative to remove administrative tasks from teachers. This strategic decision is aimed at getting teachers back to their core competencies—teaching, interacting with students, and enriching educational experiences.

Traditionally, teachers have a variety of activities and obligations aside from their teaching responsibilities. This has often included a wide range of administrative duties, although necessary for the operational aspects of education, which can take time away from teaching. By consuming significant portions of their time, such tasks have led to increased workloads and stress, potentially affecting job satisfaction and classroom performance.

DepEd's commitment to removing administrative tasks from the shoulders of teachers came from a recognition of their core mission—quality education and a quality teaching workforce. Under the MATATAG Agenda, the Department is committed to enhancing the delivery of quality basic education while promoting teacher quality and teacher welfare. By streamlining administrative duties, the DepEd aims to empower teachers to fully dedicate their professional time to enriching the educational experience for their students and to give support to teachers to teach better. This is geared toward building a conducive environment for effective teaching and learning to thrive.

The implications of such a policy are far-reaching. Teachers will potentially experience a significant reduction in their workloads, providing them with more time to prepare lessons, modify instruction to individual student needs, and engage in professional development. The teachers shall be able to focus on the teaching and learning process and become effective facilitators of learning. This can revitalize their method of instruction, resulting in a livelier and more engaged classroom environment and, eventually, better learning outcomes for the students.

For this initiative to be successful, DepEd will probably implement several strategies involving assigning specialized non-teaching personnel to handle administrative tasks, using technology to automate certain processes such as record-keeping and scheduling, and providing sufficient training to ensure a smooth transition. The non-teaching personnel who will be handling various tasks must be sufficiently knowledgeable about the tasks that will be assigned to them. Securing the necessary funding and support from various stakeholders will be critical to implementing these changes without interfering with educational institutions' regular operations.

DepEd's initiative to remove administrative tasks from teachers acknowledges the important role that teachers play in education. By allowing teachers to concentrate on their pedagogical roles, this policy promises to introduce a more dynamic learning environment, improve educational outcomes for students, and encourage a more sustainable and fulfilling teaching career. It is a beginning on the right path of valuing educators for their primary contribution. (Writer: Dalia M. Vito, Lopez NCHS Administrative Officer II)
