Chapter 1
THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND
Introduction
The widespread influence of social media on adolescents is undeniable, shaping not only their social interaction but also their fashion choices and overall behavior. This research explores the multifaceted impact of rapidly evolving social media trends on students’ behavior and fashion preferences, examining how platforms like TikTok, Instagram, and YouTube contribute to the adoption of specific styles, trends, and even behavioral norms within the students’ population.
According to Ali et. al. (2023), the impact of social media advertisements, specifically fashion ads on Facebook and Instagram, promotes fashion sense among university students. The findings showed a significant positive association between exposure to fashion ads on social media and participants’ fashion sense, purchasing behavior, and fashion exposure.
In addition, Rahim et. al (2024), indicated that fashion influences lifestyle and has an impact on all stages of life. Fashion also reflects an individual’s personality, allowing them to express themselves through the style of their clothing. Fashion is not merely a superficial expression but a powerful tool for self-presentation and societal interaction. Understanding the interaction of style and effectiveness within the confines of dress codes.
Nasugbu East Senior High School (NESHS) is one of the schools that can be seen here where almost all students apply the trends they see or know, especially when it comes to style.
To explore the impact of social media trends on student behavior and fashion choice, the researchers want to know the different effects of social media trends on students and how they can adopt them.
Background of the Study
This research explores how social media trends specifically from platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and YouTube shape students’ behavior and fashion choices. It investigates the influence of online trends on students’ clothing choices, actions, and social interaction, examining the roles of peer influence, and how these trends affect students’ self-perception and decision-making processes, both online and offline. The ultimate goal is to understand how social media shapes students’ lives and their daily choices.
This study investigated social media’s impact on fashion trends and consumer behavior. The findings showed that today’s fashion influencers are highly reputable and influential, unlike in the past when magazines were primary source of fashion information. People now rely heavily on these influencers’ opinions, consuming content online rather than through print media. This shift reflects a change in how people access and adopt fashion trends. (Henry Muturi, 2025)
In lieu therefore, social media influencers significantly impact consumer behavior. Their ability to create personal connections, showcase aspirational lifestyles, and start trends makes them powerful figures in the digital age. However, consumers must exercise caution when evaluating influencer recommendations. Understanding social media’s influence on consumer behavior is crucial for both consumers and businesses.
Statement of the Problem
The study aimed to explore the impact of social media trends on students’ behavior and fashion choices at Nasugbu East Senior High School, Brgy. Lumbangan Nasugbu Batangas, Academic Year 2023-2024.
Specifically, the study sought answer to the following questions:
1. In what ways do social media trends shape students’ fashion preferences and purchasing decisions?
2. What role do influencers and peer groups play in the adoption of fashion trends among students?
3. What are the perceived positive and negative effects of social media fashion trends on students’ social interaction and relationship?
Scope and Delimitations of the Study
The scope of our study focuses on the impact of trends on the fashion choices and behavior of senior high school students. It aims to investigate how trends in clothing, accessories, and overall style influence students’ decisions regarding their appearance. The study will also examine the social factors that contribute to these choices, such as peer pressure, media influence, and the desire for self-expression. Additionally, it will explore how these affect students’ interaction with peers and shape their sense of identity, both individually and within their social groups. Ultimately, the study seeks to gain a deeper understanding of the broader effects of fashion trends on the lifestyle, behavior, and self-perception of senior high school students.
This study is limited to senior high school students and will not include students from other educational levels. The research will focus on students from specific regions or school systems, rather than a broader, national or international context. It will examine only current fashion trends that are relevant at the time of the study, excluding outdated styles.

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE
This chapter presents an intensive review of related literatures found to be relevant to the present study. This chapter likewise includes conceptual and theoretical frameworks, and research simulacrum.
RELATED LITERATURES
According to Nielsen and Johnson (2020) social media profoundly impacts purchasing behavior, acting as a catalyst for consumer decision-making. The visual nature of platforms like Instagram facilitates product discovery, allowing users to explore a vast array of fashion items curated by brands, influencers, and fellow users. Shoppable features further streamline the purchasing process; enabling consumers to buy directly from past or advertisement; user-generated content and peer recommendation enhance trust and authenticity, influencing purchasing decisions.
Moreover, K Madhura et.al (2022) said that people enjoy digital shopping because it allows them to make purchasing decisions anytime and wherever they choose. Businesses can use social media to showcase their products on websites like Facebook, Instagram, and others. The goal of this study is to discover the social media variables that impact costumer purchasing decisions as well as to examine consumer perceptions of the items and determine now social media impacting factors directly affect costumer purchase decisions of fashion products.
Similarly, Jinyan Ge (2024) explorer the influencer marketing and sustainable fashion purchase intentions among students addressing critical challenges in the fashion industry, such as environmental impacts and overconsumption. The study introduces sustainable fashion as a potential solution and emphasizes the role of influencers in shaping students’ attitudes and behaviors.

It is necessary to determine the factors that influence brand attitude and behavior among students for the apparel sector.
Moreover, Amira Luthfiyya Wibowo (2024) mentioned that there is a significant shift towards online shopping in the digital area, particularly within the fashion industry. Students, faces challenges with online sales being considerably lower than offline sales, even though many of its customers and target market prefer purchasing fashion product online. The study reveals that design, quality and sizing are the primary factors influencing students’ preferences for fashion products.
Dentina et.al (2018) said that students select fashion goods based on their personal style and ideals. As a result, fashion businesses must learn how to provide items and experiences that costumers will view as distinctive. The brands are putting in every effort to develop their brands, attracting students’ attention to the product and building positive associations, not only to influence recall but also to induce trial and ultimately to influence purchase decisions.
Oladele Patrick Olajide et.al (2018) investigated the effect of social influence on consumer preferences for fashion clothing among students’. A simple random sampling technique was used to select students’. Structured questionnaire was adopted data collection while analysis of data was done through descriptive statistics and inferential statistics.
Lastly, NI’MATUL MAULA and Agus Hery Supadmi Irianti (2024) said that the fast fashion industry reach the threat of increasingly complicated environmental damage, and thrift fashion is one of the sustainable fashion statements that student’s favor because its affordable prize. The primary source of the study is to describe the factors of purchasing decisions of thrift fashion products for undergraduate students’ of fashion education and find out the dominant factors.

PRESENTATION, ANALYSIS, AND INTERPRETATION OF DATA
This chapter presents the data gathered analysis and interpretation to answer the problem which this study aims to achieve.
THE WAYS DO SOCIAL MEDIA TRENDS SHAPE STUDENTS FASHION PREFENCES AND PURCHASING DECISIONS
Table 1: Ways do social media trends shape students
(For me, students will be affected on trends because of online sellers, they see the new trends there therefore they are invited to buy.) | PERSUASION |
P2 | Doon po sa tanong niyo po masasagot ko lang po sa pagbebenta po ng mga produkto or sa fashion is yung paglilive nila at pagiging vloggers nila kase tuwing nakakakita tayo ng vogs or lives nagkakaroon tayo ng interest bumili or Magaya yung fashion nila. (For your questions, I can only answer when selling products or fashion is when they live and become vloggers because whenever we see vlogs and lives, we are interested in buying or copying their fashion.) | PERSUASION |
(For me, social media has a big effect on the choices of students on some fashion choice for example, Kiel the great was wearing the skirt trend, and the fashion choices of men here in the Philippines have expanded a bit.) | PERSUASION |
(Students are enticed to buy things online because of the online seller’s presentation, which is to use and buy good products.) | PERSUASION |
(In my view, they shape the youth with their fashion because not only the beauty in the eyes of the people but also the beauty of our body shape in our fashion, just like in TikTok or in the reels we see how beautiful the importance of a fashion.) | PERSUASION |
Interpretation for table 1:
All responses of the participants are all about persuasion. Table 1 shows ways to social media trends shape students fashion preferences and purchasing decisions. Five (5) directly expressed that persuasion shape students fashion preferences and purchasing decisions.
Additionally, Maria Llyas (2023) said that every individual desires to present themselves as attractive and well groomed, which often lead them to adopt the latest fashion trends. These trends are frequently influenced by fashion shows, peer groups and social media which serve as significant sources of inspirations.
Overall, the study findings reinforce existing literature, demonstrating that students persuade the influence of social media trends on students fashion preference and purchasing decisions.
THE ROLE DOES INFLUENCE AND PEER GROUPS PLAYS IN THE ADOPTION OF FASHION TREND AMONG STUDENTS
Table 2: Role does influence and peer groups plays
(Because of the influencer after those who we see on them which they wear as it is said to the students are educated by the ones they see because that the fashion is stronger and then it looks like he becomes scattered in another place.) | TO INFLUENCE |
(The role that influencers play is to give support and confidence, and when they wear clothes in their fashion then they help because they make a video than others watch it, so the viewer has confidence.) | TO BOOST CONFIDENCE |
(In my thought, social media influencer likes Kiel the great as I answered first. Kiel the great wearer the skirt trend and also wearer the street wear that is called and there are also groups of those who wear and also post on social media and also give more confidence to those wearing BG street wear so they are not ashamed.) | TO INFLUENCE |
(Influential media such as Instagram and TikTok become promoters of new fashion trends through their past and videos; they offer inspiration and ideas to students on what the current trends.) | TO INFLUENCE |
(For me, the role of influencers is to shape the youth more in fashion, because this fashion is really important to the youth, not only to us but to other people.) | TO INFLUENCE |
Interpretation for table 2:
All responses of the participants are about to influence and to boost confidence. Table 1 shows the role does influence and peer groups play in the adoption of fashion trends among students. Four (4) directly expressed to influence is what students role does influence and peer groups play adoption of fashion trends among students while one (1) to boost confidence is also experienced.
Anshu Agarwal (2023) provided an overview of the influence of social media influencers in the fashion and clothing industry. With the increasing presence of social media in people’s lives, individuals are easily influenced by what they see online, leading to the adoption of trends promoted by influencers. Influencers, who have established their personal brand and gained a sustained following, play a key role in shaping consumer preference,.

These trends are frequently influenced by fashion shows, peer groups and social media which serve as significant sources of inspirations.
Overall, the study’s findings reinforce existing literature, demonstrating that students continue experienced the influence of social media trends by their fashion to boost their confidence.
THE PERCEIVED POSITIVE AND NEGATIVE EFFECTS OF SOCIAL MEDIA FASHION TRENDS ON STUDENTS, SOCIAL INTERACTION AND RELATIONSHIP
Table 3: Perceived positive and negative effects of social media
(For me, the positive effects of fashion on students, the students learn how to express themselves through fashion that helps them develop and develop their own style but for me also has a negative effect, especially if the new fashion are sometimes other students are rude or not, they rude because they go with the fashion because they seem to be progressive when they go with the fashion.) | SELF EXPRESSION AND JUDGEMENT |
(They can boost confidence in what fashion is in different people, the negative is that not everything we see o social media and vloggers is immediately suitable for others, that’s why others imitate their fashion is sometimes not suitable.) | BOOST CONFIDENCE AND IMITATION |
(For me, the positive effect of social media of the young people is now helping the fashion industry. It continues to expand the fashion industry by giving ideas to the students.) | SUPPORT FASHION |
(The continuation of self-comparison with idealless images shown by influencers can cause low sad in thing and body image issue of the student can feel inadequate if they do not match the standard of beauty promoted by social media.) | SUPPORT FASHION |
(In my opinion, on the negative side, there are people who are not happy with it because they think its not nice to look at, but there are people who still see that fashion is more important to everyone.) | SELF EXPRESSION AND JUDGEMENT |
Interpretation for table 3:
All responses of the participants are about self-expressions and judgments, support fashion, boost confidence and imitation. Table 1 shows perceived positive and negative effects of social media fashion trends on students, social interaction and relationships. Two (2) support fashions directly expressed the positive effects of social media fashion trends on students. Two (2) self-expression and judgments directly express the negative effects of social media fashion trends on students and one (1) boost confidence and imitation is also experienced on positive effects of social media trends on students.
Moreover, Amira Luthfiyya Wibowo (2024) mentioned that there is a significant shift towards online shopping in the digital area, particularly within the fashion industry.
